New Ventures Charter school is exciting to participate in our Culinary Arts Program, sponsored in part by the Kozy Shack Puddin’ Kids 1st Vincent Gruppuso Foundation. The program includes a variety of thematic educational courses and experiential hands-on learning, which takes place at the South Fin Grill on Staten Island.
Examples of innovative coursework for participating students will include: Gastronomic Literature, the Global History of Food, Ecology and the Food Chain, Chemistry of Cooking, Microeconomics of Food Production, and more. With careful planning, these courses provide meaningful cross-curricular connections for our students, combining food science and preparation with mathematics, science, English Language Arts, biology, and the arts.
Students in this unique program will also be prepared to earn their Food Handlers Certification through a unique Culinary Boot Camp. They will also experience education related to the business processes and skills involved in restaurant management including purchasing inventory and providing farm to table operations.
At the South Fin Grill, students will also receive hands-on training by a professional Chef for 3 hours each afternoon, Monday–Thursday. Each Friday, students will then work as interns in restaurants and food-related establishments throughout Staten Island.
In keeping with our mission to provide our students with the education, confidence, and skills needed to succeed, this innovative program will provide New Ventures Charter School students with a pathway to not only earn a Regents Diploma, but also a Certificate in Culinary Arts.
